Byron Bay is a popular tourist destination that’s most well known for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and backpacker vibes.

It also has plenty of activities to offer families, which is one of the main reasons to visit Byron Bay as a family – you’ll never be bored!

Its beaches are perfect for calm and have gentle waves, perfect swimming, building sandcastles, and bodyboarding. The calm waters of Main Beach are ideal for young children who want to paddle, while The Pass is a great spot for older kids who want to try their hand at surfing.

Most of the activities in Byron are outdoors, from kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding to hiking and bike riding, so if you want to get your kids away from their screens, this is the place to come.

What’s more is many of the attractions are specifically designed for families, such as the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk, which has a stroller friendly surface, and the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which has wildlife talks for kids.

Byron Bay also has a great selection of restaurants and cafes, so you’re sure to find something to please everyone, even the fussiest of eaters!

Things To Do in Byron Bay with kids

Happily, after extending our visit to Byron Bay by two weeks, we discovered it has so much to offer children and is a place that will delight and calm their spirits.

Here are some of our kid’s favorite activities and things to do…

1. Learn to surf on easy waves surfers on The Pass, Byron Bay, NSW, AustraliaThe Pass, Byron Bay NSW

We met many young kids riding the surf each day with their parents. Byron Bay is all about the ocean, whether you’re snorkeling, diving, or swimming, but it’s mostly about the surfing.

It’s the most iconic destination for surfing in Australia, so if there’s ever a place to learn, it would be here.

Don’t worry, the surf schools cater to children too, and have some of the best instructors in the world.

If you’re already familiar with how to surf but are at beginner level, head to Byron Bay Main Beach, Wategos Beach and The Pass, which have beautiful, clean surf breaks – they are perfect for learning and for kids to build up their experience and confidence.

2. Camp on the beach stairs leading down to Clarkes Beach, Byron Bay, AustraliaClarkes Beach

Camping is a great family activity. Your kids will love walking from their tent, caravan or cabin straight onto the beach from Reflections Byron Bay Holiday Park.

This park has to be in one of the best locations in the world.

We loved sitting at the viewing deck and communal barbecue in the evening, watching the sunset as the girls played with their new campground friends.

3. Eat the best pancakes in the world Pancakes at the Macadamia Castle, Byron Bay, AustraliaHow is that for pancakes?

Just out the back of Byron Bay, off the Pacific Highway between Byron and Ballina, are possibly the BEST pancakes in the world at the Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (formerly Macadamia Castle Animal Fun Park).

Seriously, they are sooo good!

Your kids will also love venturing out the back to visit the wide assortment of farm animals, native Australian animals, play a round on the mini-golf course, or enjoy a short train ride.

4. Get a little bit zen at the Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens girls mediating near Buddha Statue at the Crystal Castle, Byron BayCrystal Castle, Byron Bay

My girls loved going to the Crystal Castle, this was one of our mummy and daughter dates.

I arrived in a stinky mood and walked out feeling calm and happy. That’s the effect of this place that has a halo of healing energy around it thanks to the hundreds of crystals in gardens, in healing grids and on show throughout the castle.

You can even stand between the two tallest crystals in the world in the garden.

It’s a really fascinating and calming way to spend the day.

5. Enjoy the evening fire-throwing shows A group of people watching performers

Head down to Byron Main Beach in the evening and enjoy a bit of take away dinner while watching a few fire-throwing shows put on by some locals to entertain the kids.

It’s also a nice time to enjoy a bit of time out as they sit riveted.

6. Do the Byron Bay Lighthouse coastal walk family posing at sign Cape Byron, NSW, AustraliaByron Bay coastal walk

We love hikes and coastal walks with our kids. The Byron Bay Lighthouse walk is a fantastic walk from Main Beach to the lighthouse that is pretty easy for kids to make.

If you have to, bribe them with an ice cream from the Lighthouse Café once they reach the top.

Byron Bay Lighthouse, AustraliaByron Bay Lighthouse

They might get to see dolphins or humpback whales along the way (June to November) or perhaps a surfer being rescued by jet ski (our girls loved this!).

At the end of the walk, they’ll get to stand at Australia’s most easterly point.

These are our favorite beaches in Byron Bay for families because they have lifeguards in the summer, and other important facilities like kiosks and toilets.

8. Visit The Byron Bay Markets people walking through byron bay marketsByron Bay markets

We’re a market family. When in a new region, one of the first things we check is the local market talent and when it’s on.

The Byron Bay Markets are on the first Sunday of every month and then every fourth Sunday is the Bangalow Markets, just a 15-minute drive away.

Kids love the face painting, enjoying a bite to eat, listening to some local music and shopping for market goodies. There’s plenty for the kids AND parents to enjoy.

9. Explore the surrounding towns family walking on Lennox Head coastal walk, AustraliaLennox Head coastal walk

Need a break from Byron? Just a short drive away are many beautiful towns for you to explore with the kids – Lennox Head, Brunswick Heads, Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Nimbin are just a few with gorgeous hinterland views, waterfalls, rainforests and great surfing breaks.

10. Eat family friendly food in Byron Burgers from Top Shop, Byron Bay, AustraliaBurgers from Top Shop

My girls are culinary explorers. They love eating out, which my wallet doesn’t enjoy too much!

Byron Bay has an incredible array of cafes and restaurants. It’s a great introduction to healthy alternatives – be prepared for plenty of sugar-free, vegetarian, whole food experiences.

There’s also great take-away options and casual cafes. The Top Shop is a locals fave for burgers and grab yourself some gourmet fish & chips from mongers and have dinner on the beach watching the sunset.

Kids just love to groove. Whether it is African drumming on the beach, busking in the streets or live music in the beer gardens or at the markets.

Byron Bay provides ample opportunities for kids to boogie.

We also love taking a picnic down in the evening and enjoying the sunset at one of the picnic tables.

12. Free juggling and hooping fun kids playing with hula hopps at byronMain beach free hooping

We walked past the Main Beach grass area one afternoon and randomly came across a young man providing free play for the kids at the beach.

He had hula hoops, unicycles, juggling gear and play toys strewn across the grass for the kids to play with. It was packed with grinning children exploring their kinesthetic talents.

Oh, and the nearby playground is great too!

Perhaps something a bit unique that you can do with kids in Byron Bay is learn how to walk the high ropes of a trapeze at Circus Arts Byron Bay.

It also has a indoor climbing wall, ninja course, and play space for toddlers.

If you’re looking for snorkel tours in Byron Bay, then consider a snorkel tour of Julian Rocks Marine Reserve, which is known for its sea turtle colony.

Choosing the perfect Shore Excursion in Georgetown, Grand
Cayman

Choosing the perfect Shore Excursion in Georgetown, Grand Cayman

We visited Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands as part of our Western Caribbean Cruise with MSC Seascape in April 2024. We had pre-booked our shore excursion in Jamaica as well as in Grand Cayman but when we arrived, we were told that our tour got cancelled due to the weather (it was windy and the seas were choppy). As soon as the cruise docked here, we took the first boat out to the pier and were greeted by thousands of agents selling cruise excursions at the port terminal. I recommend arriving here before 9 am to be able to get the best combination of excursions and catch the last departure, which is around 10 am.

Grand Cayman is a lot more developed, commercialized and afflluent than Jamaica. You can instantly tell the difference as soon as you leave the port. Now, if you wish to have a relaxed time and no adventure, your best bet is to take a $6 shuttle to the Seven Mile Beach from the port and relax there. You can also visit ‘Hell’, a unique and interesting site from the beach. If you want to be more active, I recommend buying a tour from the cruise terminal itself, at one of the kiosks, that takes you to the Stingray City, Starfish Point and Reef Snorkelling (it will cost you about $70 per person).

Seven Mile Beach

Located only 5 min away from the cruise pier, Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman is a stunning stretch of powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. If this is where you wish to head, arrive early to secure a prime spot on the beach, and don’t forget to bring sunscreen, water, and snorkeling gear. While the beach is generally safe for swimming and snorkeling, be mindful of strong currents and coral reefs, and always swim within designated areas. Despite its name, Seven Mile Beach is only about 5.5 miles long, but its beauty and tranquillity make it feel endless.

Hell

Only a 10min drive from the Seven Mile Beach, is this unique geological formation featuring eerie black limestone formations that resemble a landscape straight out of, well, hell. You could explore the place all by yourself or guided tour to learn about the area’s geology and folklore, and don’t forget to send a postcard from the Hell Post Office. Despite its name, Hell is a popular tourist attraction rather than a place of danger, but be sure to watch your step on the uneven terrain.

Stingray City

You’ll board a bus to take you to the ferry boat point (10 min) and then ride the ferry about 40 min to get to the Stingray City, a world-famous snorkeling and diving site in Grand Cayman where you can swim and interact with gentle Southern Stingrays in their natural habitat. Once you arrive at the location, prepared to wade in shallow waters with these magnificent creatures. While stingrays are generally harmless and accustomed to human interaction, it’s important to follow the instructions of your guides and avoid touching the animals’ sensitive areas, such as their eyes and gills. The guides will explain on how to interact with these creatures, and you will get to even kiss the stingrays if you wish to! It was quite a unique experience for me, and I highly recommend it. The waters in the area were so beautiful, crystal clear and turquoise blue! You get about 30-40 min here before you board the boat again and head to the next destination – Starfish Point.

Starfish Point

Starfish Point is a secluded beach on the northern coast of Grand Cayman known for its shallow, clear waters and abundance of colorful starfish. You can either swim in the waters and pick up the starfish n your hands or just spend time sunbathing on the white sandy beach. While it’s tempting to pick up or handle the starfish, it’s important to handle them gently and return them to the water after observing them, as they are delicate creatures. You’ll have about 20-30 min to spend here.

Reef Snorkel

This part of the tour was cancelled for us due to the weather and choppy waters, which was very unfortunate. Grand Cayman’s vibrant coral reefs offer some of the best snorkeling opportunities in the Caribbean, with an abundance of marine life and colorful coral formations to explore. Ideally, the boat trip should have included a stop at one of the best locations for snorkeling, for about 20 min or so.

Tips for visiting Grand Cayman

  • The weather in Grand Cayman can be very unpredictable. Some trips might get cancelled if the seas are too choppy, such as the reef snorkeling, which is what happened with us. Be prepared for last minute change to your plans when you arrive here.
  • Georgetown is an excellent place to shop and offers much better prices than the shops at the cruise terminal, which claim to be duty free but are still more expensive.
  • While the Cayman Islands have their own currency, the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD), all establishments accept USD for payment.
  • April was a busy month for cruises; everywhere we went was crowded and full of people.
  • If you’re visiting the Stingray City & Starfish Point, do not forget to carry waterproof camera and towels from your cruise!
  • The above tour to Stingray City, Reef Snorkel and Starfish Point is ideally meant to last for 3.5 hours. We had planned to visit the Seven Mile Beach and Hell thereafter. But, the trip took about 5 hours, leaving us with no time to do other activities. Keep in mind that the tours can run longer than what they’ve advertised and while they’ll bring you back before your cruise departs, you need to keep 1-2 hrs buffer and leave the cruise as early as possible in the morning.

But did you know the city is also famous for being a beer destination?

Yup, every time I do things to do in Wisconsin Dells, I never fail to visit at least several breweries during my stay.

Whether you want a laid-back afternoon, a crazy nightlife scene, or a pour-your-own-beer experience, a brewery on this list has you covered!

Overview: Top 3 Breweries in Wisconsin Dells

  • Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co.
  • Showboat Saloon & Wisconsin Dells Brewing Co.
  • Dells Distillery

1. Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. a group of people sitting around a table with pizza and beer in one of the top breweries in Wisconsin

Let’s start this list strong with one of the largest breweries in Wisconsin Dells: Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co..

Out of all the breweries we visited in the city, this brewpub left the strongest impression.

Apart from being three stories tall and having a restaurant vibe, this brewery’s concept (and name) was derived from the rich history of Moosejaw City in Canada.

So, interestingly, there were lots of Canadian-inspired decor!

“Good” is an understatement when describing the food and drinks of this brewpub.

Their piping-hot pizzas, made from scratch daily, are a must eat in Wisconsin Dells! Extra points for their eat-all-you-can buffet, which kids loved as well.

As a brewery, their 12 microbrews on tap were also on point.

We ordered the beer sampler, which served all 12 beers in 5oz sample glasses, before ordering a couple of them in glasses.

Whenever I see beer, I still daydream of the strawberry lemon ale from Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co.

Heads up– this brewery is close to some of the best Airbnbs in Wisconsin Dells, including the Cool Lakefront Condo.

2. Bevy Brewery & Winery

a close up of beer taps

Next up is Wisconsin’s Dells’ only brewery and winery in one.

This brewery didn’t make a lot of noise online and was off the beaten path, so I entered it with little to no expectations.

Little did I know that this interestingly green-colored brewery would give me the most fun brewing experience in the Dells!

See, Bevy Brewery & Winery is a pour-your-own bar, paid by the ounce.

You can pour as much or as little of whichever drink you want. Sips and full glasses are all welcome!

Oh, and did I mention that this brewery makes everything themselves? Not just beers and wines but also non-alcoholic drinks like ciders and meads.

As of writing, the brewery is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. If you want to enjoy live music and beverages, visit during the latter.

Fun fact: Bevy Brewery & Winery is in the former building of the now-closed Port Huron Brewery Wisconsin Dells.

The newer brewery paid tribute to the previous pub by offering the classic Port Huron Honey Blonde on tap. A must-try drink!

3. Showboat Saloon & Wisconsin Dells Brewing Co.

Crowd in front of stage waving their hands to music during a music festival

When we asked locals downtown what the best bars in Wisconsin Dells are, most pointed us to the Showboat Saloon.

The locals’ recommendations never disappoint.

Showboat Saloon is a partygoer’s paradise—a gem for music enthusiasts who love unforgettable night-outs brimming with good cocktails, beer, and food.

We spent the night here with bright neon lights and nonstop trendy music. When the clock hit 9 pm, a band even performed live!

Showboat Saloon offers over 24 revolving taps (there is no permanent beer menu), so visiting this brewery is always a pleasant surprise!

It’s conveniently located across the street from the iconic Riverwalk, too. Hence, it was only a half-hour’s walk away from our accommodation, Mt. Olympus Parks, one of the best indoor water parks in Wisconsin.

4. Brewster’s Lanes & Banquet Center a group of friends having a beer at a bowling alley

Drive twenty minutes from the Dells, and you’ll find yourself in Brewster’s Lanes & Banquet Center, one of the most popular breweries in Wisconsin.

But it’s not just a brewery.

It’s also a bowling center, entertainment hub, dining spot, sports streaming venue, and fun zone all in one place!

Grab your favorite beer from one corner, order a classic pepperoni pizza from another, play bowling, watch your favorite sports, or hit the arcade!

Brewster’s Lanes is your best bet if you want a more chill yet fun hangout rather than a “wild” one.

I didn’t quite get a close look at their beer selection.

However, the craft beer the waiter recommended matched extremely well with the Hangover Burger I ordered.

I recommend this spot. It felt very nostalgic to play pool and darts after so long.

5. Spring Brook Sports Bar & Grill

close up shot of two beers being clinked together by two hands with people in the background

When we stayed several weeks in Wisconsin Dells, this bar quickly became our go-to stop for enjoying sports events and local entertainment.

The first notable aspect of the Spring Brook Sports Bar & Grill is its ever-so-famous $45 “Monster Bloody Mary.”

It’s a menu item with a pitcher of your chosen beverage, a bouquet of appetizers, such as corn dogs, sandwiches, beef sticks, and three very refreshing beer chasers.

That’s the tip of this Wisconsin Dells brewing company’s goodness.

The bar’s atmosphere itself was very welcoming. There were many more fantastic menu items (order their banger prime ribs).

Plus, it hosted performances of locals at least once a week. Both indoors and on the outdoor patio.

Visiting this bar easily became among my favorite things to do in Wisconsin Dells in March. Surely, you’ll feel the same.

6. River’s Edge Pub & Grub

close up of two hands holding beer mugs and about to clink them together

The River’s Edge Pub & Grub is a renowned cabin-style pub popular for its large portions of hearty meals.

It’s located just minutes’ walk from the edge of Wisconsin’s River, making it a perfect lunch or dinner stop after enjoying the river’s beauty or the establishments near it.

Besides its unique tree trunk with lights in the middle of the bar, I loved this brewery’s shrimp special (most of us ordered this) and walleye.

You won’t be disappointed with the selection of beer, either. However, I have to say that it’s not as extensive as others on this list.

The River’s Edge Pub & Grub is one of the best breweries in the city. I also give it bonus points for being minutes of drive away from some of the best cheap cabins in Wisconsin Dells

7. Dells Distillery

Group of four arms holding beer pints and bottles cheersing

Dells Distillery is a brewery operating in Downtown Dells since 2013.

At first glance, this bar’s storefront doesn’t look too different from the bakeries and cheese shops beside it.

But step one foot inside, and you’ll be welcomed by a 1920s Western-themed distillery with a stellar selection of beers, rum, gin, bourbon brandy, and whiskey!

Of course, good liquor needs good food, so you’ll also find some of the best tots, sandwiches, and roasted beef in town on the menu.

Never leave this distillery without tasting their tots, as you’ll miss half of the fun! Dells Distillery offers tons of alcoholic beverages except for wine.

But it’s just 10 minutes by cab away from Prairie Hawk Winery Wisconsin Dells if you ever decide you need more of a wine day instead of a beer one.

8. Monk’s Bar & Grill a glass of beer and a hamburger which is blurry on a wooden table

Dubbed by many as Wisconsin’s first craft burger bar, Monk’s Bar & Grill is the home to the best burger in Wisconsin Dells.

It’s been operating very successfully for over 70 years, and its popularity seems to have never dropped since.

When seated in the table areas, Monk’s Bar & Grill’s vibe is similar to that of a family-friendly restaurant.

But step closer to the bar, and you’ll feel like you’re in the hottest brewery in town.

One of the best things to do in Wisconsin Dells in February is visit this bar during the Super Bowl.

I enjoyed the good selection of beers on tap (though they didn’t offer flights yet when I visited), the food, and the company of locals.

If you want to stay at an accommodation near this brewery, I highly recommend staying at the Wilderness Resort, one of the best waterparks in Wisconsin Dells

9. High Rock Cafe & Showboat Saloon meal of sausages and potatoes with foamy beer

Being founded by chefs who travelled all over the US to find the most mouth-watering recipes, High Rock Cafe & Showboat Saloon is best known for its cuisine and cafe-centered intererior design.

Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice this saloon is also a hidden gem for craft beer selections and cocktails. Maybe even some of the best in the city.

When I visited, the menu included over ten cocktails and nearly the same number of beers, so don’t worry if the site states otherwise.

Can’t remember the name of the beer exactly, but I partnered one of the saloon’s beers with their stuffed mushrooms and pork potstickers, and I’d honestly order the same combination if I ever visit this brewery.

Many refer to this place as a cafe, but I’ll always call it a brewery, as it’s, in fact, one of the best breweries in Wisconsin Dells.

Pro tip: Sit on the second floor by the windows. The views fit the Dells’ vibes very well. You might even see a performer on the street if you’re lucky!
